What is a Moscow Mule?
POSTED: May 17th, 2013A Moscow Mule is a buck or mule cocktail made with vodka, ginger beer and lime which was popular during the vodka craze in the United States during the 1950s. The name refers to the popular perception of vodka as a Russian product.
The cocktail was invented in 1941 by John G. Martin of G.F. Heublein Brothers, Inc., an East Coast spirits and food distributor, and “Jack” Morgan, President of Cock ‘n’ Bull Products (which produced ginger beer) and proprietor of the Cock ‘n’ Bull restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles that has since closed its doors.
The Moscow Mule is making its comeback and we wanted to be sure our guests could enjoy all that is a Moscow Mule. Our Beverage team has created three different Mules for you to enjoy; each with their own flavor. Recently launched in all Yard House locations are our versions of a Moscow Mule; the traditional Mule, a Hawaiian Mule and a Jameson Mule. Cheers and enjoy!

Yard House Annual Beer Review is Complete!
POSTED: May 8th, 2013After putting together a panel of beer specialists including; beverage managers Aaron B. and Dan O. and beverage supervisor Greg H., Kip Snider, our beverage director has completed the annual Beer Review resulting in the addition of new brands, emerging styles and individual menus for each of our 44 locations.
Snider assembles a team of beer experts to both taste and rate the current beer offerings, as well as potential new labels and styles to possibly add to the menu. The group gathers for a few hours daily over a four-week period to partake in blind beer tastings and individually rating each beer on a 1 to 5 scale – anything that scores a 3 or below does not move forward in the process. Next the ratings are entered into a spread sheet, which then returns an individual score for each beer. A low score doesn’t necessarily result in a beer’s removal, while a high score doesn’t necessarily guarantee a tap at the bar.
“If it was purely about taste, the process would be much simpler, but we need to look at how well a beer is performing along with what are guests are telling us.” says Snider.
After the most recent review, which took place at our Home Office in Orange County, California, we now offer more than 950 domestic, craft and imported beer brands company-wide with 6,300 tap handles shared by our 44 locations. While each restaurant has its own individual beer list and between 100 and to 250 taps depending on the location, they all share a core list of about 25 of the most popular brands. And while each location shares a core list, the more well-known brands and styles with nationwide distribution, that’s where the similarities end. After that, each restaurant’s beer list is purely its own.
With all of these recent changes, you should come on down and see what new brews are at your local Yard House!
Congratulations to our Marathon Runners!
POSTED: May 7th, 2013
This weekend Nicole from our Marketing department completed the OC Half Marathon on Sunday, May 5th! After months of training her hope of completing the half marathon in her fastest time came true. Nicole plans on taking on the Beach Cities Half Marathon Challenge. The Beach Cities Challenge is a race series that includes three Southern California half marathons – Surf City Marathon, the OC Marathon, and the Long Beach Marathon. Runners who complete all three events consecutively will receive a special Beach Cities Challenge Medal. We couldn’t be more pumped for her to succeed!
Jackie first signed up for a half-marathon in 2009 to prove to herself that she could indeed complete a half-marathon. She suffers from asthma and has had multiple knee surgeries so for her running any distance was an accomplishment. After her first race she was hooked on that runners high and wanted to complete more events. She started signing up for the local Southern California events and continued to push herself through personal goals. After completing 5 events she decided to take the Beach Cities Challenge and complete the series with her first full Marathon. Last October she crossed the finish line after 5 hours and 34 minutes at the Long Beach Marathon. After completing her first full marathon she began signing up for marathons that had specific interest to her. She completed the Disney Half-Marathon which took her through both Disney theme parks, around the Honda Center and across the Angels Stadium. This past weekend she completed the San Diego Safari Park Half-Marathon which traveled through the wine country of San Diego and finished the last few miles running through the Safari Park with all of the different animals. “It was a lot of fun to cross the finish line with the lions and elephants within my view” said Jackie. She’s not sure how many more she plans on doing but the few that do interest her she’s already making plans to complete like the Maui Half-Marathon, Halloween Costume Party Half-Marathon, and the Las Vegas Glow Party Half-Marathon.
We wish Jackie the best of luck in completing her Half-Marathons!

Here are four simple ways to make your beer drinking more eco-friendly!
1. When you’re home… Drink Canned.
Aluminum is easy to recycle and many craft breweries are now offering
canned beers specifically for this reason.
2. When you’re out… Drink Draft
Less packaging means less waste.
3. When you can… Drink Local.
By drinking local you help in the reduction of the carbon footprint
associated with mass shipments of beer.
4. Always… Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
Above all else, establish a recycling routine.
